2025 Plastics Industry Trends & Predictions
Today, the automotive industry is at a crossroads. Electric vehicles (EVs) were once expected to dominate the market by 2030, but consumer adoption has fallen short. Many automakers are rethinking their EV strategies and must decide whether to continue pouring resources into EVs or shift focus back to hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which will likely remain prominent for the foreseeable future.
At the same time, standards for fuel economy and battery life are becoming more stringent, creating increasing pressure to lightweight vehicles. Plastic materials can help reduce vehicle weight without sacrificing durability or performance, so many OEMs are adopting more plastics in automotive design. Given this shift, we believe the plastics industry is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of automotive manufacturing.
With the election behind us and a new administration taking office, there are likely to be some shifts in policies and regulations that could create headwinds at the start of the year. Overall, we’re anticipating a relatively flat year for automotive production.
In North America, the EV market has fallen short of expectations. Many OEMs have invested billions into EV technologies to comply with regulatory pushes, but customer adoption has been slower than anticipated. EVs are here to stay, but new EV model launches will likely be put on hold and widespread innovation curtailed until charging infrastructure improves, allowing consumers to travel more freely without having to plan routes around available charging stations. We’re already seeing automakers scale back on EV programs and reconsider planned battery plant expansions. This presents an opportunity to embrace more hybrid models.
On the hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) side, we do expect new platforms to emerge, though economic factors like higher interest rates are still limiting car sales. Hybrid models offer a practical middle ground, with proven technology that appeals to consumers.
The automotive market in the last quarter of 2024 has been relatively slow, and forecasting for 2025 is more challenging than ever. To navigate this uncertainty, effective communication will be key. Stay close to your customers, share inventory data, and align your production and purchasing plans accordingly. Regularly reassess market conditions to adjust your strategy in real-time and ensure you’re prepared for potential changes.
Lightweighting by using plastic to replace metal will remain a key trend, driving improvements in fuel efficiency and battery life. Additionally, sustainable plastics are gaining traction, particularly in Europe, where demand is increasing for more eco-friendly materials in automotive applications.
Rigorous testing will be necessary to ensure that sustainable plastic substitutes meet safety, durability and environmental standards, without compromising on performance, emissions or volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The key to success in 2025 will be making products that align with customer needs. Focus on creating solutions that people actually want and can use, such as hybrid engines over EVs, as this will drive profitability. Be open to opportunities for growth by engaging with customers, listening to their feedback and staying in tune with market trends.
